The ancient port town of Marakkanam is located 120 km from Chennai. It is the third largest producer of salt in the state, spread over 4,000 acres, the grey and white landscape is broken by dots of colour that are the salt pan workers, steeped every day in the corrosive, scorching evaporation ponds raking  crystal salt.
